Growing Ideas and Minds for Success

UPS has long supported education and literacy by funding a variety of educational programs, scholarships and endowments. But we don’t stop there.

To allow for a steady influx of new talent and ideas, UPS is committed to preparing our next generation of business leaders and thinkers by supporting diverse education programs that when coupled with part-time jobs — including benefits — help us attract and retain a skilled and motivated workforce.

From partnering with the United Negro College Fund and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to offering assistance to minority students to offering a generous tuition assistance package to our own employees, we are involved in strategic efforts to provide education assistance.

UPS Education programs include:

  • Earn and Learn: Educational assistance for part-time employees.
  • Metropolitan College: A satellite degree program for UPS employees working at the UPS Worldport air hub in Louisville, Kentucky.
  • Distance Learning: A partnership with Thomas Edison State College (New Jersey) for UPS employees to earn degrees through remote learning programs.

  • Available Scholarships: An array of national and UPS employee scholarship programs finance higher education goals at over 665 independent colleges nationwide; scholarship programs are also available to children of UPS employees.
  • UPS Internships: Partnering with the non-profit leadership and development organization INROADS, UPS offers college students hands-on experience with $2,500 in scholarships to select interns every year.
  • Toys for Tots Year-Round Literacy Program: The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc. network year-round initiative offers our nation’s most economically disadvantaged children the ability to compete academically and to succeed in life by providing them direct access to books and educational resources that will enhance their ability to read and to communicate effectively.

The results of these efforts speak for themselves, as a large percentage of UPS's workforce in the United States has advanced from part-time to full-time positions and from non-management to management positions:

  • The average full-time UPS manager has worked for the company 15.3 years.
  • In 2006, 13,535 part-time employees advanced to full-time positions.
  • 55 percent of our current full-time drivers were once part-time employees.
  • 85 percent of our full-time management employees were promoted from non-management positions.
  • 56 percent of our vice-president-level employees started in non-management positions.
  • 8 of the 12 members of our Management Committee started in non-management positions at UPS.
